Caption: Serbian UN Peacekeeper Killed in Lebanon Shelling Ahead of Ceasefire Renewal. A Serbian peacekeeper serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has died after an attack against a peacekeeping base: two Spanish soldiers were injured. The soldier received emergency treatment at the base before being airlifted to a hospital in Beirut, where he later succumbed to his wounds, according to Serbian authorities. UNIFIL expressed condolences to the peacekeeper's family, friends and colleagues and wished the injured personnel a full and speedy recovery. The mission has launched an investigation, although it remains unclear who was responsible for the shelling amid ongoing exchanges of fire between Israeli forces and Hezbollah Fighters. UNIFIL warned that deliberate attacks on peacekeepers could constitute grave violations of international humanitarian law and possible war crimes, while noting a sharp rise in cross-border fire across southern Lebanon. The attack occurred against the backdrop of escalating hostilities that began in March and came just hours before a US-backed ceasefire renewal between Israel and Lebanon was due to take effect. Spanish PM, Pedro Sánchez, has censured the attacks on the base ‘Miguel de Cervantes’: “Our most absolute condemnation of violence and all our support for those who risk their lives under the flag of the United Nations”, he wrote on X.
