More than 70% of Swiss voters have rejected proposals to impose a stricter interpretation of the country's long-standing policy of neutrality. The proposals would have prevented Switzerland from imposing sanctions without UN approval and restricted closer ties with the NATO military alliance. The debate over Swiss neutrality has intensified since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine and Switzerland's decision to adopt sanctions against Moscow. Russia backed the initiative, which was supported by the right-wing Swiss People's Party but opposed by the federal government and other major parties. Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis has argued that neutrality should be applied flexibly and does not mean remaining indifferent to violations of international rules. Switzerland continues to prohibit arms sales to countries involved in conflicts and has previously refused requests to allow Swiss-made ammunition to be supplied to Ukraine. Switzerland’s neutrality was internationally recognised in 1815 and remains a defining feature of the country's foreign policy.
