The Oscar-winning star announced his retirement from acting after 2017's Phantom Thread, however, he recently made a comeback to star in his son Ronan Day-Lewis's feature directorial debut Anemone, which they co-wrote. During an interview with Empire magazine, the Lincoln actor described Anemone as "a lovely gift" that has reignited his love of acting. ”Most particularly it being Ronan's first film, and having been there every day with him from the beginning, that experience was unique and beautiful," he told the publication. Addressing the future of his acting career, he teased, "The appetite always seems to emerge in relation to something that I've become fascinated with, and I believe that could very easily happen. I'm certainly not going to shy away from it.” In Anemone, Day-Lewis plays a former British soldier, Ray Stoker, who reconnects with his brother Jem, played by Sean Bean, after a period of estrangement from his family. The There Will Be Blood actor previously told Rolling Stone that he regretted declaring his retirement from acting so publicly. ”Looking back on it now - I would have done well to just keep my mouth shut, for sure," Day-Lewis said earlier this month. "I never intended to retire, really. I just stopped doing that particular type of work so I could do some other work. I never, you know... Apparently, I've been accused of retiring twice now. I never meant to retire from anything! I just wanted to work on something else for a while.” Anemone, which also stars Samantha Morton, is currently on the film festival circuit before its U.K. release on 7 November.
