Caption: Typhoon Ragasa Bears Down on China After Killing 15 in Taiwan. Typhoon Ragasa, the world’s most powerful tropical cyclone of the year, made landfall in southern China on Wednesday after causing significant destruction in Taiwan. The typhoon killed at least 15 people in Taiwan, and 17 others remain missing after a barrier lake overflowed in Hualien county. The island's eastern region, especially Guangfu, reported insufficient warning and damage from the typhoon’s heavy rains and floodwaters. Hong Kong also felt the storm’s wrath, with huge waves crashing along its eastern shoreline, submerging roads and residential areas. China’s marine authority issued its highest red wave warning, forecasting dangerous storm surges up to 2.8 meters (9 feet) in Guangdong province. Although Ragasa weakened to a Category 3 typhoon, it remains powerful enough to cause significant damage, including fallen trees and power outages. The storm, which formed over the Western Pacific, intensified rapidly to a Category 5 super typhoon before weakening slightly as it neared China. Over 770,000 people have been evacuated in Guangdong, with emergency supplies, including tents and lighting, dispatched to the area. In Shenzhen, locals experienced the typhoon's fury, with one woman and her child swept into the ocean as they watched the storm from the waterfront.
