Caption: X Shuts Down Operations in Brazil Amid Legal Clash with Supreme Court. Social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, announced it will close its operations in Brazil due to legal tensions with the country’s Supreme Court, Sky News reports. The decision came after Judge Alexandre de Moraes allegedly threatened to arrest X's legal representative in Brazil if the company did not comply with certain court orders. X stated that its remaining staff in Brazil would be removed "effective immediately," although the service will still be accessible in the country. The conflict between X and Judge de Moraes has been ongoing, primarily concerning issues of free speech, far-right accounts, and misinformation. In April, Judge de Moraes launched an investigation into Elon Musk, X's CEO, over the spread of defamatory fake news and other criminal allegations. X claims that the judge's recent orders amount to censorship and has publicly shared what it alleges to be a copy of the court order in question. The Supreme Court's press office has not yet commented or confirmed the authenticity of the document released by X. Elon Musk took to X on Saturday night, comparing Judge de Moraes to Voldemort, the infamous villain from the Harry Potter series. Judge de Moraes is a controversial figure, particularly among Brazil's political right, which accuses him of overreaching his authority to suppress free speech. The judge has been active in investigating former President Jair Bolsonaro and ordering the arrest of his supporters involved in the January 2023 government building attacks.
