Caption: Daredevil Skier Becomes First In History To Conquer Everest Without Oxygen. A Polish ski mountaineer has become the first person in history to summit Everest without oxygen and ski down to base camp. On September 22, Andrzej Bargiel, 37, spent 16 hours in Everest's "death zone" before skiing from the summit. Bargiel descended via the South Col, reaching Camp II by nightfall, then continued the next morning to base camp. Only around 200 climbers have reached Everest's summit without oxygen, but Bargiel skied the entire way down. At 8,849 meters, air pressure is so thin, climbers inhale only a third of the oxygen they would at sea level. Bargiel skied through the dangerous Khumbu Icefall, a challenge even for climbers on foot. His brother, Bartek, guided him through the Icefall with a drone, helping find a safe path. Veteran climbers call it one of the greatest achievements in mountaineering history.
