Headline: UNCAPTIONED: How to make healthy habits stick

Caption: How to make healthy habits stick. Dr Mahrukh Khwaja, dentist, positive psychologist and founder and CEO of Mind Ninja, has shared her top tips for how to begin building habits that will last. Make Habits fun. For example trampolining to get in exercise as opposed to joining a gym. ”The more fun, the better. This increases our levels of 'high quality' motivation (sits with our values, known as intrinsic motivation) as we are doing a new behaviour we inherently enjoy.” Start small. When you begin building habits, make sure they are achievable, otherwise they will be less likely to stick. “Break down larger goals into manageable small ones, this ensures we don't feel overwhelmed.” Habit stacking. Adding to existing habits can often be easier than starting from the very beginning. Such as adding a 2 minute mindfulness breathing routine to a regular running habit. Growth mindset approach. New habits take time and persistence. ”Having a growth mindset, one that believes you can learn and grow, no matter what age, is hugely beneficial in helping you persist.” Temptation bundling. Linking pleasurable temptations with a habit that provides delayed rewards, such as only listening to your favourite podcast whilst cycling. Fresh starts. Starting new habits when you are going through a life change can often be helpful. That is natural break points in life, such as new move, starting a new job, start of the week or a new year. Celebrate progress. Increasing our levels of positive emotions make us feel good and more likely to continue with our habit. “Acknowledging your progress also helps you to lean towards a growth mindset.” THIS VIDEO MUST NOT BE EDITED FOR LENGTH TO COMBINE WITH OTHER CONTENT
