Caption: OpenAI's New Advanced AI May Have Played a Role in Sam Altman Chaos. Futurism reports that mystery continues to swirl around drama at OpenAI that saw CEO Sam Altman ousted and then reinstated less than a week later. One of the theories behind the upheaval is that the company may have developed a highly advanced AI that threw the board into chaos. Last week, Reuters was one of the outlets to report that OpenAI had been spooked by its Q* project, pronounced "Q star". The new Q* system has been touted as a significant step towards the company's goal of achieving an AGI, or artificial general intelligence. Reuters reported that Mira Murati, a former OpenAI nonprofit board member, acknowledged the existence of this new Q* model in an internal staff message. Sources claim that Q* was at the heart of the decision to fire Altman over a push for commercializing the product before it was fully understood. Those sources claim the new AI system is capable of solving grade-school math equations, an achievement long considered a benchmark in developing an AGI. "In the case of math, we know existing AIs have been shown to be capable of undergraduate-level math but to struggle with anything more advanced." "However, if an AI can solve new, unseen problems, not just regurgitate or reshape existing knowledge, then this would be a big deal, even if the math is relatively simple.", Andrew Rogoyski, Director at the Surrey Institute for People-Centered AI, via Futurism. Futurism reports that researchers remain optimistic that if Q* is capable of solving these simple math problems, it would represent a major step forward toward actual AGI.
