Headline: RAW VIDEO: Crazy creations crash land at Cape Town 'Flugtag' event

Caption: Red Bull’s crazy Flugtag event returned to Cape Town, South Africa for the first time in 13 years on Sunday (02November2025). In total, 43 daring teams hurled themselves off a nine-metre platform at the V&A Waterfront in homemade flying machines. Armed with nothing more than cardboard, duct tape, and a questionable grasp of aerodynamics, participants launched into the chilly Atlantic before enthusiastic crowds, proving once again that South Africans can turn even the most spectacular failures into high entertainment. From township innovators to corporate engineers, family tinkerers to university students, teams from across the Rainbow Nation showcased contraptions ranging from “cleverly designed” to “clearly built this morning.” The event, which took place beneath the backdrop of Table Mountain, was judged by B-girl Courtnaé Paul, Red Bull spinner Sam Sam, comedian Okay Wasabi, influencer Ling Ling, and hockey star Tati Zulu, who scored competitors on flight distance, creativity, and showmanship. When the spray settled, it was Team Thunderstruck who lived up to their AC/DC-inspired name, gliding a record 19 metres before splashing down. The group of aviation professionals, led by pilot Scott Ternant, Captain Angus Money and Chief Engineer Martin Venn, transformed months of preparation into the day’s winning flight. “Two of our members took part in the 2012 Red Bull Flugtag, and we had such a blast we knew we had to come back,” said Ternant, dripping but delighted. Their “lightning bolt in the sky” machine, supported by a 30-person crew handling design, construction and choreography, proved that skill and spectacle could coexist – albeit briefly. While Thunderstruck claimed the top prize, the day’s real triumph was the sheer diversity of imagination on display. Team names read like a love letter to South African culture: Air Wors and Wors Case Scenario paid tribute to the nation’s favourite sausage; Bunny Chowers honoured Durban’s iconic dish; and Hakuna Matuktuk reimagined the city’s tuk-tuks with Disney flair. Others, such as Quantum Mechanics, Da Vinci’s Dream, and Fishin’ Impossible, ensured there was no shortage of wit on the runway.
