Caption: Ukraine was hit by fierce snowstorms on Sunday (26November2023), with Odesa in the south particularly hard hit. In the Odesa region, emergency officials were involved 75 times in addressing the aftermath of adverse weather conditions, with operations conducted both in the city of Odesa and the surrounding region. Of these interventions, 62 instances focused on assisting the towing of trucks and cars from challenging road areas, resulting in the removal of 145 vehicles, including 6 buses and 5 emergency response vehicles. Additionally, emergency crews removed 13 fallen trees and provided aid to 248 individuals. Ukraine’s President, Volodymyr Zelensky said in a statement: “Thank you to all rescuers, workers of communal services, National Police, regional and local authorities, energy workers who help people. “As of this morning, due to bad weather, more than 2,000 settlements have been cut off in 16 regions of Ukraine, and road traffic has been blocked.” Due to severe weather impacts, travel along the M15 route (Odesa - Reni) has been temporarily prohibited until the adverse weather effects are mitigated. A metal power transmission tower was damaged in a snowstorm in the Odessa region, as reported by the Ukrenergo National Power Company on Facebook. In the Kirovograd region, where 27 missions were conducted to address deteriorating weather conditions, emergency responders assisted tow trucks and cars 19 times, removing 22 vehicles carrying 25 people. They were also involved in addressing accidents three times and clearing fallen trees on roads and sidewalks five times. Similarly, 28 units of equipment and 106 personnel from DSNS (State Emergency Service of Ukraine) were engaged. Rescuers in the Mykolaiv region responded to adverse weather consequences 18 times, providing assistance to tow trucks and cars 14 times and clearing fallen trees from roads four times. A total of 83 individuals and 21 units of equipment from DSNS were mobilised in the region. Across Ukraine, approximately 500 personnel and 131 firefighting and special equipment units from DSNS are actively working to eliminate the consequences of adverse weather and provide assistance to the affected population.
