While some applauded the Italian priest, he was quickly excommunicated. Simone Giusti, the bishop of Tuscan province Livorno, ordered Guidetti to be "removed from the office of parish priest of St. Ranieri in Guasticce" since he "publicly committed an act of a schismatic nature." He also issued a warning to other priests "not to participate in any of his celebrations or other cult practices" or they would suffer "the very serious penalty of excommunication.". Guidetti responded to being excommunicated, saying it was "a mark of pride to be out of this church, which is a tyranny.". "I am calm. But astonished at the speed at which the guillotine came down.
