Headline: RAW VIDEO: 'One Of The Strongest' Solar Flares Causes Radio Interference On Earth
Caption: NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory captured footage of a solar flare at 12 pm ET– the strongest in recent history - which interfered with radio communications on Thursday 14 December 2023. These images show a subset of extreme ultraviolet light that highlights the extremely hot material in flares, and which is colorized in teal. The footage captured of the coronal mass ejection (CME) came from NASA’s solar dynamics observatory, a spacecraft which constantly monitors the sun. NASA classified the flare as an X2.8 flare. X-class denotes the most intense flares, while the number provides more information about its strength. X-class flares have the potential to affect radio communications, electric power grids, navigation signals and pose risks to spacecraft and astronauts. Thursday’s burst of energy caused about two hours of radio interference in some parts of the US following its eruption. The National Atmospheric and Oceanic Administration said its impact on radio communications was felt between midday and 2pm ET on Thursday. It is the strongest solar flare recorded since 10 September 2017 and the NOAA said it is an “amazing event” and “one of the largest ever recorded”.
