Caption: Hungarian-Ukrainian sculptor Mihály Kolodko places his unusual and whimsical artworks in Budapest. The guerrilla artist’s mini statues keep popping up throughout the city. They include the Austrian Emperor (and former King of Hungary of course) Franz Joseph - which appeared on Liberty Bridge (which used to bear his name) in 2021. The hammock refers to those who took over the bridge while it was closed to road traffic. Kolodko also created a mini statue of a tiny roman legionary he placed in the ruins of the amphitheatre of Aquincum, the ancient Roman city founded on the Danube that is now in Budapest. He also took a similr tiny soldier to the Pula Arena in Croatia. One of his more poignant is a sculpture of a Russian warship with Vladimir Putin’s head on top. It is a reference to one of the two warships that attacked Snake Island on February 24th, 2022, the first day of the Russian invasion of Ukraine - and which were given a swift, and rude response by the Ukrainian garrison there. Kolodko has been based in Budapest for many years, but he was born in Ungvár, Ukraine and has family and friends in his homeland.
