To ensure their survival, the eggs are relocated for preservation and subjected to artificial incubation, with their sex determined by the incubation temperature. Billy Collett, the Operations Manager at the Australian Reptile Park, shared, "Just as I was preparing to unwind with my family on Christmas Day, my team alerted me to Irene laying her eggs. I rushed to collect them with the team! It was the best Christmas gift I received this year—nothing quite quickens the pulse like a nest retrieval!" Collett continued, "This is a yearly tradition, and all our keepers relish getting muddy to rescue baby alligators from potentially perilous situations, especially with Australia's scorching summer ahead and the presence of larger cannibalistic adult alligators." The Australian Reptile Park boasts the largest population of American alligators in Australia, and visitors can witness their feeding sessions during the summer school holidays at 12:30 pm daily. Collett emphasized the meticulousness of the process, stating, "One wrong move can be costly, so we meticulously adhere to a carefully devised plan and ensure the well-being of the protective mother. After releasing her, we continue monitoring her throughout the day. Given the number of females tending to nests, it appears that it will be a busy summer for the reptile team!" In the wild, American alligators diligently protect their eggs until they hatch, then gently excavate the hatchlings, carry them in their mouths to the water, and shield them as they develop and acquire survival skills. The primary threat to baby alligators is other alligators, given the species' cannibalistic tendencies. This is one of the key reasons why staff removes them from the lagoon, which houses over 40 adult alligators.
