Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado has called for elections in 2027 after returning to the country, declaring its move towards democracy “irreversible”. Machado thanked the Trump administration for opening the "floodgate to freedom" by capturing former President Nicolás Maduro in January. Interim President Delcy Rodríguez also said elections would be held and argued her government should oversee the transition, but did not announce a date. Machado rejected the idea of Rodríguez overseeing the transition, saying the process should be "irreversible, organised, pacific”.
