Headline: RAW VIDEO: 2977bhp Chinese Electric Hypercar Breaks EV Speed Record

Caption: A 2977bhp Chinese electric hypercar has broken the speed record for electric cars at a racetrack in Germany. The YANGWANG U9 Track Edition managed 472.41 km/h (293.6 mph) on 8 August 2025 at the ATP Automotive Testing track in Papenburg, breaking the previous world record and becoming the fastest electric vehicle ever built. The car is produced by YANGWANG, the high-end sub-brand of Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD. German racing driver Marc Basseng, who also set last year’s record, was behind the wheel. “Last year, I thought I'd peaked. I never expected to break my own record so soon — but here we are, at the same track, with new technologies that have made it possible,” he said. The U9 Track Edition is based on the same e4 Platform and DiSus-X technical architecture as the U9 road car sold in China, but with major enhancements. It features the world’s first mass-produced 1200V ultra-high-voltage vehicle platform, alongside a thermal-management system designed for extreme conditions. The quad-motor e4 Platform delivers more than 3,000PS of power — with each motor producing up to 555kW and spinning at 30,000rpm. That gives the car a power-to-weight ratio of 1,217PS per tonne, placing it among the most powerful vehicles ever built. A sophisticated torque-vectoring system monitors road conditions over 100 times per second, adjusting each wheel’s torque to prevent slip and maintain control even at extreme speeds. Meanwhile, the DiSus-X Intelligent Body Control System manages the suspension at each corner of the car, making rapid vertical adjustments to suppress pitch and roll, while maximising tyre grip. The Track Edition retains the aerodynamic design of the standard U9, with the addition of an optional carbon-fibre front splitter designed to withstand ultra-high-speed running. To handle the demands of record-breaking speeds, YANGWANG collaborated with Giti Tire to produce a bespoke semi-slick track tyre, with a special compound, tailored tread design and anti-slip features to improve durability and stability under extreme acceleration. Backed by BYD’s wider focus on innovation and sustainability, YANGWANG claims its record-breaking car demonstrates that electric power can deliver both performance and environmental responsibility.
