The 29-year-old guaranteed his promotion to world number one by defeating Dutch player Tallon Griekspoor 6-4, 7-5 in the last 16 of the Vienna Open on Thursday. Zverev will officially replace Italy's Jannik Sinner when the new ATP rankings are published on Monday, November 2, becoming the 30th player to reach the top spot. He will be only the second German man to achieve the feat, following Boris Becker, who first became world number one in 1991. The achievement crowns an extraordinary season for Zverev, who claimed his first two Grand Slam titles by winning the French Open and the US Open. His rise has been helped by injuries to his main rivals, with Sinner ending his season early because of a knee problem, while Carlos Alcaraz has also been dealing with injury setbacks. Zverev came close to reaching the top of the rankings in 2022, but a serious ankle injury sustained during his French Open semi-final against Rafael Nadal forced him to miss the rest of that season. Celebrating his achievement in Vienna alongside his team, Zverev described reaching the summit of the rankings as a special feeling, different from winning a major tournament.
