Headline: UNCAPTIONED: Sarah Mullally Named As First Female Archbishop Of Canterbury

Caption: Sarah Mullally Named As First Female Archbishop Of Canterbury. Dame Sarah Mullally has been named the new Archbishop of Canterbury designate becoming the first woman to be chosen for the role in nearly 500 years of Church of England history. A former NHS chief nurse, Mullally became a priest in 2006 and was appointed the first female Bishop of London in 2018, the third most senior role in the Church. The position has been vacant for almost a year following Justin Welby’s resignation over a safeguarding scandal involving child abuse. Archbishop of York Stephen Cottrell took on Welby’s responsibilities during the interim and was part of the voting body that selected Mullally. In line with tradition, her appointment will be passed to Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and then formally confirmed by the monarch. Dame Sarah will legally take up the role in January, with an enthronement service to follow after paying homage to the King. She becomes the spiritual leader of the Church and the worldwide Anglican Communion, marking a historic milestone for women in the clergy.
